In Embers, Jill London departs from the rigid geometry of her gilded panels to explore a more fluid, elemental abstraction. Created during a summer residency in the historic log cabin of artist and Wingspread Gallery founder Thistle Brown in Bar Harbor, Maine, this work captures the intersection of rugged coastal atmosphere and contemplative silence. The piece is a unique 1/1 monotype, a process that mirrors the spontaneity of London’s early years in the New York avant-garde while embracing the organic textures of the Maine wilderness.
The composition is a dense, rhythmic field of deep indigo and sea-foam greens, punctuated by flashes of copper and gold that flicker like dying light—or, as the title suggests, the glowing remains of a fire. London describes the work as a visual prayer for universal peace, a sentiment felt in the balance between the turbulent, gestural brushwork and the grounding stillness of the surrounding white space.
Continuing her commitment to total craftsmanship, London has hand-gilded the custom frame, extending the luminous quality of the work from the deckled edges of the paper to the outer architectural boundary. This piece serves as a sophisticated testament to a pivotal period in London’s career, bridging the gap between her Lower East Side foundations and the spiritual clarity found in the natural world.
