In this 1997 soundscape, Jill London translates the ephemeral energy of live music into a permanent visual record, utilizing a gestural language that bridges the gap between ancient ritual and modern abstraction. Painted on museum board and protected by ultraviolet block plexiglass, the work is housed in a frame handcrafted by London herself, an extension of her mastery in traditional water gilding and frame-making honed under the legendary Robert Kulicke. Her practice is uniquely informed by the materials and methods of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, yet her focus remains firmly on the contemporary pursuit of freedom of thought. Having maintained a studio in the Lower East Side for over four decades and worked alongside figures like Jean-Michel Basquiat, London infuses her watercolor compositions with a bicoastal urban energy tempered by the discipline of Taiji and Qigong. This piece serves as an immersive space for contemplation, where fluid washes and rhythmic marks invite the viewer to experience a vast, abstract field of movement. Now residing in the forests north of San Francisco, London continues to create works that are held in prestigious global collections, including the Museum of Archaeology in Cuenca, Spain, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, consistently offering a sense of beauty and open thought as a sanctuary against the complexities of the modern world.
