In Night Water, Jill London offers a nocturnal meditation on fluid movement and atmospheric depth through a masterclass in the monoprint medium. Moving away from the fiery intensity of her earlier studies, this 2004 work utilizes the singular nature of the process to capture the rhythmic pulsing of the sea under a moonlit sky. The composition features a dense, gestural field of deep violets and bruised indigos applied with horizontal sweeping motions that evoke an undulating tide, dramatically interrupted by bands of earthy ochre and crimson. True to London’s commitment to total craftsmanship, the piece is housed in a custom frame hand-finished in 22K gold leaf, which serves as a luminous architectural boundary to the somber ink. In a sophisticated nod to exploration and place, London integrated a vintage map of Marin County as the backing, grounding the elemental abstraction in a specific geography. Encased in ultraviolet block plexiglass to preserve its delicate pigments, the work represents a mature harmony between London’s New York avant-garde roots and a heightened spiritual clarity, capturing the psychological experience of finding light and order within the vast, fluid unknown.
