Carved solid hardwood, hand-dyed custom blue finish

Founded in 2017 by architects Sofia and Adam Zimmerman—an outgrowth of their celebrated practice Zimmerman Workshop—Brooklyn-based studio Ottra operates at the intersection of architecture, digital craft, and traditional woodworking. Named after the couple’s children, Otto and Petra, the studio is renowned for reimagining domestic forms through monumental, biomorphic volumes sculpted from solid timber.

This rocking chair radically reinterprets a classic kinetic archetype, discarding conventional parallel runners in favor of a singular, monolithic carved plinth. The substantial, scoop-formed base serves as an undulating rocker, grounding the piece while allowing a fluid, rhythmic glide. Rising from recessed sockets in the base, four organic, seamless legs cradle a low-slung, ergonomic shell. Laminated from solid domestic hardwood and carved subtractively through CNC routing and meticulous hand-sculpting, the design exposes concentric growth rings and strata that map the chair’s surface like a topographic chart.

Finished in a custom luminous blue wash that highlights the natural grain as a painterly element, this design is produced in strictly limited numbers and is typically accessible solely through bespoke commission. Offered in excellent condition, this specific piece presents a rare opportunity for collectors: an exhibition-ready studio work available for immediate acquisition without the customary made-to-order fabrication lead time.
