Robert Wymer is a South Austin-based artist specializing in painting and antique restoration. Born and raised in San Antonio, he earned a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. A third-generation painter and sculptor, Robert was deeply influenced by his grandfather, an avid collector who studied color and technique by copying works of masters like Matisse and Gauguin—often painting on burlap to replicate the originals.

Wymer's  painting's ground was meticulously prepared using traditional rabbit skin glue gesso, a time-honored technique that creates a flexible yet receptive surface, enhancing the longevity and luminosity of the subsequent paint layers, echoing the methods of Old Masters."

Robert’s work spans abstract pattern studies, allegorical compositions, and plein air landscapes of Mexico and the American Southwest. He paints from life—never photographs—using acrylic, oil, and watercolor. Grounded in real objects, his art explores contrasts and contradictions, blending graphic clarity with intellectual depth. As he puts it, “My work is decorative, yet aspires to weightiness—it reflects how my mind reacts to contemporary culture.”

A strong proponent of Christopher Alexander’s “pattern language,” Robert sees design as an organizing force in both architecture and art. In 2022, he completed a silent retreat at a Texas Catholic monastery, producing a series of works recently exhibited in San Antonio.
