In the wall sculpture Velvet Rocks, Sabine Stromeyer presents a concentrated study in tactile abstraction, reinterpreting the natural landscape through a distinctly industrial lens. Moving between Berlin and Houston, Stromeyer became a vital figure in the Texas art community, refining her three-dimensional approach at the Glassell School of Art and serving on the advisory board of the Arts Alliance Center. This intimate work serves as a microcosm of her career-long mission to transform overlooked, utilitarian materials into organic-feeling forms that appeal to the viewer’s sense of touch.

The composition is a rigorous exploration of unusual surfaces, featuring twelve high-relief, bulbous forms that mimic the moss-covered stones or alpine vegetation found in shaded woodland floors. Using a mixed-media collage technique, Stromeyer applies a dense, fibrous flocking to create a soft, velvet-like finish, strikingly contrasted against a rigid, olive-toned acrylic substrate. This interplay of strong textures and monochromatic forest greens allows the piece to function as a site-specific architectural element, blurring the line between a traditional painting and a three-dimensional landscape sculpture.

Signed on the reverse and accompanied by an original artist appraisal label, Velvet Rocks represents the intimate, experimental side of Stromeyer's celebrated body of work. Her sculptures are held in prestigious private and public collections across the United States, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland, marking her as an international artist with a deep-rooted commitment to the Houston art scene.
