The beetle’s surface is not merely painted but alchemically bonded with precious metals. Utilizing the ancient and complex technique of metallic luster, a rich amalgam of 24kt gold, platinum, and copper is hand-brushed onto the already-glazed ceramic. The piece then undergoes a precarious third firing in a reducing atmosphere—a process that deprives the kiln of oxygen, forcing the metals to fuse permanently with the glaze.
