This exceptional late 19th-century tabletop cheval mirror—historically known in French antique circles as a psyché—elegantly captures the functional luxury and architectural refinement of the Late Victorian and Aesthetic Movement. The piece features a swiveling rectangular mirror plate suspended between two turned column standards on a footed trestle base. Ingeniously engineered for stability, the upper frame and horizontal support bars are composed of a non-magnetic copper alloy heavily layered in silver plate, while the tightening knobs and splayed, curled bracket feet are crafted from weighted cast iron to prevent tipping and ensure the durability of the threads. The reverse is finished with a classic ebonized backing pane to protect the glass, which itself exhibits a wonderful, authentic foxing. Highly coveted for its striking "shadowed" aesthetic, the mirror boasts an exceptional aged patina where decades of wear allow the warm brass and bronze base metals to beautifully bleed through the oxidized silver plating, making it a sophisticated, tactile statement piece for a contemporary vanity, dressing room, or tabletop display.
