In Then, celebrated artist Jesus Zamarrón delivers a striking, introspective study of scale, memory, and the metaphysical human condition. The composition centers on a monumental, seated figure bathed in fiery, incandescent tones of amber and vermilion, compressed within an electric, deeply textured ultramarine void. The deliberate choice to display this work framed without glass invites an unfiltered, intimate engagement with the surface, allowing the viewer to directly absorb the raw, kinetic energy of Zamarrón’s brushstrokes and the physical texture of the medium. Drawing from his roots in Spain and his time in California, Zamarrón synthesizes a vibrant, sun-drenched palette with a hauntingly quiet narrative. The primary subject sits in a tight, contemplative posture, serving as a psychological landscape for two minuscule, ghostly figures that traverse his body—one perched on the shoulder, another standing upon the knee. These elements beautifully illustrate Zamarrón's signature fusion of spontaneous gesture and deeper, magical-realist storytelling. Then operates as an open-ended question about time: a visual manifestation of a dream state where memory, reality, and spiritual isolation beautifully collide.
