Before the Texans entered the scene in 2002, the Houston Oilers held the spotlight as the football team to watch. Even now, the Oilers' classic uniforms are grabbing attention nationwide, especially when the University of Houston's football team sported similar attire during their season opener. But who exactly were the Oilers?

It all started in 1960 when Bud Adams, an oil tycoon with a passion for the game, founded the Houston Oilers as part of the American Football League. The team immediately made waves, clinching back-to-back championships in its first two years. 

As the years went by, the Oilers outgrew their stadiums, moving from the expansive Rice Stadium to the pioneering Astrodome in 1968, where they became the first professional football team to play indoors on synthetic turf. The merger of the American Football League with the National Football League in 1970 opened up new opportunities for the Oilers, leading them to the playoffs a remarkable ten times.

Under the leadership of head coach Bum Phillips from 1975 to 1980, the Oilers reached the pinnacle of success, tallying the most wins in franchise history.

In the late 1980s, Adams sought a larger stadium for the team, even threatening to relocate to Florida if the Astrodome wasn't expanded. Although the county eventually approved an expansion plan, Adams continued to explore other options, ultimately settling on Tennessee. The Oilers' relocation to Nashville in 1997 left many Houston football fans heartbroken.

In 2002, a new era dawned with the debut of the Houston Texans in the NFL, under the ownership of Bob McNair.
