Canadian Post-Modernism: Jaymar "Ribbon" Coil Chair in Original Memphis Velour
31”W x 30 3/4”H Seat Height:17 1/2”H Backrest Height: 16”H Base:28 1/2”D
A defining moment in Canadian furniture design, this pair of sculptural coil chairs by Jaymar Furniture Ltd perfectly encapsulates the bold, geometric energy of the 1980s Post-Modern movement. Often referred to as "Ribbon" chairs, their silhouette is a continuous, gravity-defying helix that serves as both functional seating and kinetic sculpture.
These examples are distinguished by their pristine, original upholstery—a textured black plush velour that serves as a canvas for a striking Memphis-style motif. The fabric features floating geometric confetti—cubes, spheres, and zig-zagging "squiggles"—rendered in metallic gold and taupe threads against the deep noir background. The close-up detail reveals a high-quality woven construction where the metallic elements catch the light, adding depth and movement to the piece.

Retaining their original manufacturer's law tags, these chairs are confirmed authentic Jaymar productions made in Canada. Built with a solid internal structure encased in polyurethane foam and polyester fiber, they offer a surprisingly comfortable, suspended seating experience grounded by a weighted base. We currently have a pair of these chairs available.
Two available. Sold Separately.
Great vintage condition. The chair retains its structural integrity and the foam remains supple. As with all original vintage pieces, there are minor signs of age, including light wear to the fabric pile and minor scuffs to the base consistent with history and use.
