Some separation of fabric from frame. Original upholstery. Some scuffs to base. Wear consistent with age.

Contemporary upholstered "System 1-2-3" dining chairs, original design by Verner Panton (Denmark, 1926-1998) in 1973, for Verpan, having S-shaped cantilever swivel seat, in grey fabric upholstery, rising on circular brushed aluminum base, maker's mark underfoot.

Among the giants of Danish design, Verner Panton established a unique reputation for his exuberant originality and tireless experimentation. Panton created lamps, furniture and textiles – and was also a sought-after interior designer. Although he was at the forefront of mid-century Danish Modern, Panton’s contribution was anything but mainstream. He enthusiastically embraced new materials, he splashed with a bold colour palette, and he playfully imbued many of his sculptural creations with a strong graphical expression – without ever compromising on quality or workmanship. Panton’s iconic designs have emerged as contemporary design classics – as strikingly inventive now as they were 50 years ago.

Sold as a set.

Verpan introduced two chairs from the original 1-2-3 series designed by Verner Panton in 1973. The series originally comprised 20 different models with variations in seat height, arm rests and feet. The original commission was to design a furniture programme that combined a series of different functions with the basic requirement of good sitting comfort. The chairs focus was to have a simple and natural design, so they could fit into any environment as a functional element.

It took Verner Panton three years to develop the series, and the result was a unique chair concept where Panton worked systematically with design and function based on a defined theme, which he described as follows:"I wanted to design furniture that grows up out of the floor, to turn the furniture into something organic and never with four legs." The chair originally featured a light frame construction made from steel upon which fabric could be mounted. In the new version, Verpan has used foam rubber for increased sitting comfort and to ensure a tight and even upholstering.
