Arthur Court, a San Francisco-based designer, is beloved by his fans for his sophisticated and cheerful furnishings inspired by natural forms such as flowers, cacti, antlers, and animals. His diverse experiences, from a nature-filled childhood in Minnesota to Navy service in the Pacific during World War II and African safaris in later life, influenced his designs.
After the war, he established an interior design business in San Francisco, serving high-profile clients like Shirley Temple Black and the Andrews Sisters. In 1966, he opened a store offering smaller furniture pieces, tabletop wares, and decorative sculptures, including glass-topped tables with nature-inspired bases, whimsical animal-themed candlesticks and ice buckets, and unique cast-aluminum lamps shaped like tortoise shells.
