Born in New Orleans in 1927, Dunbar’s education took him from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University to the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where he earned his BFA in painting in 1953. His work is held in prestigious collections, including the British Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
Dunbar has received numerous accolades, including the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the Opus Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ogden Museum in 2022, cementing his legacy as a key figure in Louisiana’s art and culture.
