This exquisite pair of late 19th-century Chinese blue and white ginger jars, produced during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, represents a spirited example of provincial export porcelain characterized by a soulful, free-hand depiction of chrysanthemums and stylized foliage. The ovoid forms are decorated with a continuous floral scroll in a deep, variegated cobalt underglaze, a painterly application that celebrates the organic movement of the brush typical of the late Qing era. In Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum is a revered symbol of nobility and longevity, carrying particular significance during the Double Ninth Festival, or Chongyang. As nine is the ultimate symbol of yang energy, this festival serves as a time for honoring ancestors and celebrating the vitality of the elderly, often through the appreciation of these autumn blooms. Each vessel bears a vintage red wax export seal on the underside, a hallmark of authenticated transit that adds a layer of historical provenance to the pair. These jars remain in remarkable antique condition, free of chips or restorations, with only light, honest wear consistent with their age. Offered individually or as a matched pair, they serve as timeless decorative anchors that bridge the gap between ancient symbolism and contemporary design.
