This exceptional 19th-century silver miniature represents a pinnacle of the Dutch "toy" silver tradition, meticulously hand-crafted in the historic silversmithing center of Schoonhoven. Bearing the hallmark for 1887 (date letter "C"), the piece is a verified early-career work from the prestigious workshop of Herbert Hooikaas, a maker celebrated for his architectural fidelity and ornate storytelling in miniature form.
Two available. Sold separately.
Fashioned as a traditional drop-leaf table, the box features a central hinged lid and two operable wings, supported by elegant tapered legs and a delicate X-stretcher. The exterior is a masterclass in repoussé and ajouré artistry, enveloped in intricate figural narratives of pastoral leisure and courtly romance, all framed within high-relief foliate scrollwork and rocaille borders. Stamped with high-purity Dutch silver marks (.835 and .930), this 139-year-old curiosity bridges the gap between functional sculpture and the Victorian fascination with the cabinet of wonders.
