An organic study in sculptural form and natural texture, this mid-century Japanese hand-carved tiered vessel exemplifies the rustic, wabi-sabi elegance of the Mingei folk art tradition. Masterfully hand-carved from feather-light Kiri (Paulownia wood)—a material prized by traditional Japanese woodworkers for its delicate weight and soft, tactile grain—the piece features three cascading leaf-form tiers elevated by a sweeping architectural root handle. Deep gouge marks across the leaf veins celebrate the hand of the artisan, while a warm, burnished amber-to-espresso finish brings dynamic depth to the wood grain.
The base retains its original Japanese ink signature (sumigaki), confirming its artisanal provenance. Showing age-appropriate, authentic checking (natural stress hairline cracks along the wood grain) that speaks to its age and solid wood construction, the structure remains entirely solid and intact. A striking, conversation-starting centerpiece designed to bring texture, warmth, and sculptural presence to modern tables, sideboards, or entryway consoles.
"Beautiful vintage condition with a rich hand-burnished patina. Features minor natural checking (aging stress cracks along the natural wood grain near joints), which are typical for solid hand-carved hardwood sculptures of this era and do not affect structural integrity. Structurally complete with no breaks, repairs, or lost pieces."
